BOXING DAY 1

BOXING DAY

Boxing Day is a holiday that takes place mainly in the United Kingdom and in several European countries one day after Christmas, that is, on December 26. During the time of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) it was decreed that after December 25 there would be a second holiday known as the second day of Christmas, a celebration that has been maintained over time. It is a historical British tradition where gifts, food and donations are shared to the poorest as a result of those gifts that have been left over after the Christmas celebrations.

the beginning

During the Middle Ages, the families of the Nobles after the Christmas Day festivities gave their servants baskets of fruit, food and gifts. Likewise, at strategic points in the cities of the kingdom, large baskets with food and donations were placed so that the most needy could come and take their bonus and food. The custom has been maintained for hundreds of years and now commercial and sports activities have been added, which has led to this national holiday being one of the most special of the year.

Boxing Day around the world

Several countries have adopted the Boxing Day celebration and added it as a national holiday. In Europe, in countries such as Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg, Greece, Iceland, Finland, Croatia, they have established December 26 as a holiday, a date that coincides with the As in the United Kingdom, with the day of Saint Stephen, so Boxing Day is considered a religious tradition linked to the principles of the Christian Era.

Trade and Boxing Day

A particular fact that marks the celebration is that as it is a holiday, families make some purchases. Department stores carry special discounts on those products that were not sold for Christmas, which becomes something similar to Black Friday that takes place in the United States and Canada the day after Thanksgiving .

Football during the celebration of Boxing Day

The English Football League has several football matches scheduled for this date corresponding to its Premier League championship . In England it is common for families to attend the stadiums together to watch football matches, so every December 26, up to six (6) or more matches are scheduled in different cities in addition to having television broadcasts for several countries.
